Our Story

It’s not often a whole city gets involved in ‘make-believe’ to foster healthy imaginations but it does for one Festival weekend each year. Come join us to be a big part of something truly fantastical!

In case you haven’t noticed, Port Adelaide is THE place to be if you’re a pirate.  It has 2 Tall Ships (and a ghost ship) and lots of hidden treasure.

It’s also the perfect place for kids to imagine the thrill of adventures on the high seas and for families to dress up and unleash their inner pirate.

Yarr!
218In 2013, during a visit of 3 Dutch Tall Ships, the Pirates of Port Adelaide hijacked the city and held the visiting hordes to ransom.

In 2014 & 2015, the Dutch Tall Ships were nervous about a repeat visit but the ghostly City of Adelaide Clipper Ship returned home to join the Paaarty.

In 2017 it officially became a Pirate Festival and registered internationally as a legitimate (as much as an anarchic pirate can be legitimate) International Talk Like a Pirate Day event.

Who knows what excitement we'll have together in the future...

Captain Larry and his First Mate be th' scurvy seadogs behind the invasion o' Port Adelaide.

They curate the Pirate Festival, host the anchor events, support all the pop-up activities and manage the overall promotion and marketing.
Not all treasure is silver and gold

The Pirate Festival is a collaboration of effort involving local community groups, traders, tourism operators, pubs, clubs, restaurants and cafes.
The event program and treasure hunt maps guides visitors to find the Port's treasures. Some are obvious - museums, dolphins, galleries, architecture and markets, but some need effort to discover.  Follow the map to where x marks the spot.

Always be yourself, unless you can be a pirate. Then always be a pirate.

Everyone is invited to release their inner pirate during the Pirates of Port Adelaide Festival but what to wear...
No matter the cloth - fancy or rags - eye patches, hooks, hats, bandanas, earrings, parrots and sabres finish the look. But a real Port Adelaide pirate always wears a friendly "Yarr!"
